General Membership Guidelines
I want to get this information out to as many people as possible, so I've slashed the cost of membership to the bone. Full Membership was £200 and is now £20. Tell your friends!
People from all parts of the world can become Full Forvik Members at a cost of £20. Minors under the age of 16 years can become members at half the adult price as long as one of their parents is also a member.
Members can also apply for a Forvik passport, drivers license, company registration, vehicle registration and other benefits, as they become available. They are entitled to a share in the distribution of profits as decided by The Ting (see below).
Members can also be part of a 'Ting', or parliament. They are entitled to vote and participate in the island's unique open direct democracy system, deciding how the income of Forvik is to be used. The Ting will decide how the island's income is spent and what projects are undertaken - how much is spent on capital projects, on promotion, a legal fighting fund, or distributed as profit to the members, etc.
There is also a Special Honorary Membership awarded at the discretion of His Excellency The First Minister for services to Forvik.
Members can apply for a passport driving licence and bank account when available, but will have to supply further details. Forvik car registration, company registration and other benefits will become available as things progress. Full members can also be part of the Ting. The Ting decides what happens on Forvik, passes legislation and decides how profits are used.
Can I live on Forvik?
Forvik is very small - only 2.5 acres (one hectare). Access is very difficult and it lies in a stretch of water with very strong tides. Shetland weather is very windy and this combination of factors makes permanent residence impractical for most people. The first building has been erected and it has successfully weathered three winters. When we have a safe harbour, a decision will be made whether or not to start a small community on the island.
Dual Membership
Forvik allows dual citizenship and has a policy of non-disclosure about who its citizens are.
