In spite of admitting in writing that I had driven the Land Rover without UK tax, MOT or insurance, the police appear to be taking no action. They have referred the matter of having no tax to the DVLA, who have invited me to pay them £147 to avoid court action - which I declined. Under normal circumstances, a motorist committing these 'offences' would be in court immediately and be facing a fine of up to £1,000. It seems the police have some sympathy with my position! They entered into a contract with me when they instructed the Land Rover to be removed. The constable at the scene signed a statement saying he had read and understood the the notice on the windscreen that makes anyone removing the vehicle liable to pay me £1,000 plus expenses. They have not yet paid the resulting £1436 invoice, but I have sent them a statement reminding them that it is now overdue. Go to Vehicle Registrations for the whole story.
