The Crown Dependency of Forvik

General Citizenship Guidelines

I want to get this information out to as many people as possible, so I've slashed the cost of citizenship to the bone. Full Citizenship was £200 and is now £20. Honorary citizenship was £100 and is now £10. Tell your friends!

People from all parts of the world can become Full Forvik Citizens at a cost of £20. Minors under the age of 16 years can become citizens at half the adult price as long as one of their parents is also a citizen.

Citizens can also apply for a Forvik passport, drivers license, company registration, vehicle registration and other benefits, as they become available. They are entitled to a share in the distribution of profits as decided by The Ting (see below).

Citizens with a significant Shetland connection (resident in Shetland, born in Shetland, both parents born in Shetland and similar) can also be part of a 'Ting', or parliament. They are entitled to vote and participate in the island's unique open direct democracy system, deciding how the income of Forvik is to be used. The Ting will decide how the island's income is spent and what projects are undertaken - how much is spent on capital projects, on promotion, a legal fighting fund, or distributed as profit to the citizens, etc. If you are not already a Shetland resident, you can become one.

Those wishing to support the ideals and aspirations of Forvik, but who don't want to fill in all the forms, can apply for honorary citizenship at a cost of £10. Honorary Citizens are entitled to a share in the distribution of profits as decided by The Ting, but cannot apply for a passport.

There is also a Special  Honorary Citizenship awarded at the discretion of His Excellency The Steward for services to Forvik.

Why the different types of citizenship?
Anyone can become an Honorary Citizen - you just pay the one Gulde and you get a certificate, plus a share in Forvik's profits as decided by the Ting (parliament). Full citizens must supply more details and make a binding declaration. We check to ensure no undesirable or criminal elements slip through. Full citizens can apply for a passport and bank account when available. Forvik driving licenses, car registration, company registration and other benefits will become available as things progress. Full citizens who are Shetland residents and those with strong Shetland connections can also be part of the Ting. The Ting decides what happens on Forvik, passes legislation and decides how profits are used.

Can I live on Forvik?
Forvik is very small - only 2.5 acres (one hectare). Access is very difficult and it lies in a stretch of water with very strong tides. Shetland weather is very windy and this combination of factors makes permanent residence impractical for most people. The first building has been erected and the 2008/2009 winter will be the first test for it. After that a decision will be made whether or not to start a small community on the island. Meanwhile, you can get all the advantages and more by buying a property on Shetland itself.

Dual Citizenship
Forvik allows dual citizenship and has a policy of non-disclosure about who its citizens are.
