The First Gale and House Under Way

A good period of fine weather finally broke with a storm from the South West. For most of the time I had been working on the island, winds were from a Northerly quarter, or quite light. I had not seen the South harbour in a strong South Westerly, but expected the worst. I had prepared the East harbour with rings and lines, so moved the boat when I heard the forecast. The pictures tell the story. The boat could not have survived these conditions.

I've started to build a  wooden slipway/landing stage in the South harbour. It makes it easier to land and I can draw the boat up for maintenance.

The East harbour has far better shelter in most wind directions, but access is not so easy - I've had to make steps up the 30 ft. cliff and getting building materials up by this route would be difficult.

Good progress on the house. The big unknown was whether the ply panels would bend round the sharper radius at the top of the arch. Fortunately they did - after some persuasion. I managed to get just over half way before having to batten down for the storm. I'm building the house like a boat - all glued and screwed to make a one-piece monocoque structure.

That night the tent was blowing all over the place - would probably have blown away except for the wind break netting.
